Early telephones didn’t have a keypad or dial—you had to talk directly to an operator to connect your call.
The first telephones were powered by hand-cranked generators, not electricity from the wall.
Early users often had to shout into the phone because the sound quality was very weak.
The earliest telephones could only connect to one other phone (called a “point-to-point” system).
Telephone lines were sometimes strung between trees before proper poles were installed.
