Want to Know More?

The earth is made up of four main layers called the geosphere

  • 1. Inner Core – Solid metal center of the earth; extremely hot (9000° F), 1500 miles thick
  • 2. Outer Core – Liquid metal layer that generates magnetic field, 1300 miles thick
  • 3. Mantle – Thick, semi-solid layer, 1800 miles thick, makes up 84% of earth’s volume
  • 4. Crust – Solid, thin, outermost layer where we live (only part we see), around 44 miles thick. Continental crust is thicker, but lighter than oceanic crust. Oceanic Crust is thinner, but heavier than continental curst.
